MIDI RTP

Post by curtbl »

Paul, I know you will know this straight away! Midi RTP is not grayed out on the X32 producer, but cannot seem to get it to work or communicate. Is it functional and if so is there setup info anywhere? Trying to utilize this in a church location now and it will become important in the theater application as well going forward.
Thanks
Curt

Hi Curt,

Yes we know it is not greyed out. But it was never implemented unfortunately. The developers told us recently that it probably will not be implemented. Sorry to say. The checkbox will probably be removed in future firmware.

Hi Curt,

I second what Paul mentioned. Can you use USB for you MIDI needs? If speed or the amount of MIDI data processed is of concern, that may be a good solution. It may not carry all the features required (?) by RTP MIDI though.
https://forums.iconnectivity.com/index. ... connection actually mentions USB MIDI to be better if you don't have the need for longer distance as Ethernet would enable.

so the issue is a church setup where there are several systems from lighting, video graphics to multiple locations throughout the facility. So RTP would have been great to add the console into the processes. It will be interesting to see how this develops over time as IT/IP Ethernet becomes more and more of a solution ie dante and video is now starting to hit the streets and looks good from a latency point of view which has also been a huge issue.
just thinking out loud!

Other solutions (involving dongles though) include using Ethernet for 'long distances' with USB<->Ethernet converters. I remember having one of these in my 'junk box'. I'll have to check it out, see if it makes sense.

As to Dante, latency issues are almost a thing of the pas with higher speed networks (1Gb/s standard), 2.5G and 10G are becoming common too, and can be supported by Dante.

The big hit with Dante is the PCI card for the computer. But even with DVS it's actually still very good.

Dante can have a latency as low as 150us in ideal environments.

Using DVS and the default lowest latency of 4 ms rivals the USB connection IMO.
