VST plugins for Dante

Post by GaryH »

This just might get the Wing waves card hopefuls moving over to a Dante system. Seems pretty nice, though I have not checked closely, don't know costs either. Interesting.

That's cool. The audio in/outputs alone make that thing useful to me. Nice and easy was to get more stuff onto the networks. Thanks for posting that @GaryH!

I didn't see any provision for stereo operation though.

@pvannatto Thanks for the links, I will watch them! @MJKlein I have yet to really investigate it re: stereo..seems like it has great potential in a Dante system but who knows....and of course price and availability all come into play. I'm still looking for their stage boxes (for the TIO line of mixers) to actually BE anywhere for sale, not on order, but I have not looked lately. @curtbl is going to test them with a Wing Dante card at some point as he has access to a few.

@GaryH I watched the four videos that are available, and it does audio up the USB hose. I find that kind of strange because I thought it would do audio on Dante. Either that or I'm completely missing how it works.

@MJKlein I just did watch (skimmed) the 4 vids. It looks to me like the operation and workings of the plugins are one part of the process and accessed via the USB part of the computer and Yamaha software to control them, kind of like how X32-Edit works. There you adjust everything with the X32-edit software but the resulting audio is sent to/from your DAW via the mixers USB/Firewire/XLive card. The Dante audio part is via the usual rj45 connection to the Dante Card in the mixer. In other words the adjustment and processing take place in the connected computer environment via USB and the I/O is sent to and from the mixer via the Dante connection. So Dante audio from mixer (like X-Dante) to the RUio Dante port, processed there via the usb connection and software on a computer, then that processed audio returned to the mixer via the RUio Dante port to the mixer (like X-Dante). Looks like up to 16 ch's of Dante (16 mono plugins?) at any one time to subscribe any Dante ch to? Also it looks to me like stereo operation would be quite possible, maybe the easiest way to use it? Like just as an insert to a dedicated RUio named X32/Wing bus pair. It also looks like, at least for live work, the USB audio (as opposed to DVS) would be the driver of choice on the pc/Mac r/t lowest possible latency. I don't think that would be an issue (Andy pretty much said that directly) if used in a studio where 2-3ms additional latency might not matter, so DVS would be fine. It probably would take a decent amount of fooling with to dial in based on how you primarily use it. I would love to fool with one for a week or 2! Probably by the time I could buy one (if I could), there will be plenty of Youtube examples to draw from. I of course am only giving my take on looking at those videos. If $ were of no concern and they were available to buy today, I would buy one for sure. (At least one part of that equation is not true :-))

At it's core the device is a 16 channel Dante <-> USB bridge. The included VST Rack Pro lets you, on a PC connected to the device, run VST3 plugins of your choose linked to the USB input channels and the output goes back through USB to the device.
Next it has 2 analog inputs and outputs linked to channels 15 & 16 on the Dante and USB side.

Meaning that the RUio16-D is just a audio protocol bridge between Dante, USB and analog. No processing happens inside it. All the plugins will run in the computer, but it suppose to have a pretty good bypass function to keep the audio flowing if something happens on the computer side.

The biggest difference between DVS is indeed the latency, looking at the Yamaha videos, it will be around a 5 ms round trip time, depending on the PC hardware and plugins you want to use. Which is lower than what DVS can achieve.

He specifically said that DVS should be disabled and that using it would cause too much latency.

I don't see how you would get a single stereo plugin to output across two channels.

At any rate the whole thing is geared for live sound which I do not do.
