Thank you, Paul.

Surely, I need to create spatial playback with groups of instruments that come from their place in the orchestra. This is why I want a clear sound space with well defined directions from the stage for harmonic clarity. That doesn't indeed need surround, only correlation between the stage (depth and height) and the concert hall space for the audience. It's complex, complicated and hard to achieve with simple stereo, so I want to try my luck with the U-Phoria. I have the latest ASIO4all. I wander whether it would do, or I would have to find a dedicated package for the U-Phoria. And, too, not only would I have to use ASIO but also quit using SONAR Studio 8, for it doesn't have multi channel output; only detects the hardware if it's multi channel. So hello Reaper (can't afford Reason). Linux would be nice, but it still doesn't have a compact, seamless and fully integrated audio system. Tried UBUNTU Studio v21; no dice, since it still needs scripts and it doesn't do well with all hardware. However, Linux's biggest problem is its lack of the large choice of libraries available for Windows. Thank you for pointing out the full 8 channel capability of the U-Phoria. Anyway, I am becoming too wordy.

Thanks again, John.

Don't use ASIO4all. It is a kludge (bandaid) that works on top of Windows WDM drivers and will cause problems. Use the provide ASIO drivers that I gave the link to.
So hello Reaper (can't afford Reason).
Reaper is a great DAW. I've used it for a number of projects.

I tried Ubuntu Studio, but don't like the interface. I'm using linux Mint, since Micro$oft abandoned Win7 and love it. I use Reaper with my digital consoles (XR18, MR18, X32 Rack and Wing) and have recorded a number of bands as well as record/produced 2 CD's for a local Catholic worship team. I've yet to encounter any hardware issues other than my Dymo label printer, since Dymo doesn't provide its software for linux. Fortunately I found a linux alternative app that actually works better.
However, Linux's biggest problem is its lack of the large choice of libraries available for Windows.
Wine 7 has gotten much better with running Windows programs. And now Micro$oft is now collaborating with the Wine team to make version 8 more compatible.

Any modern DAW can utilize the multichannel capability of manufacturer provided ASIO drivers. Before you decide what you can and cannot use, install the supplied driver first and take a look at the DAW configuration. That being said, Reaper is arguably the most capable and configurable DAW in existence. One can automate virtually any operation, including plug-in parameters. Just quickly hijacking the thread for a REAPER related question: I faced last weekend this problem trying to deal with recording on a Xenix 2222USB console: Can you record from your PC analog Audio in REAPER while playing back audio using ASIO drivers (or vice versa)?
Couldn't find a solution (other than installing something else for quick test...) turns out Audacity can do it, even if really a pain to deal with.

In Reaper you can only choose 1 interface at a time. If you're using multitrack ASIO then it would be impossible to record the Windows system audio.

But if you use the Master bus in Reaper then you can choose the standard windows driver, and you should be able to record the system audio while playing tracks. You'll only have 2 tracks out of Reaper and you'll have to use the mixer inside Reaper.

I forgot to mention that if you're playing multi-track audio through your console and using a monitor controller with a USB interface, a third party program can record that USB audio through the Windows system. You won't be able to record it in Reaper but at least you could record it simply enough.

If you are using a Dante Network you can put the PC audio on the Dante Network with Dante Via, and use that as an input to Reaper.
