Guitars, Strings, Playability, Feeling, and Sound

Over at the Tascam Forums there is an interesting ongoing discussion about guitar string gauges, among other things that might be of interest:

Totally agree with what's said there. Electric guitars: string gauge do make a difference, pickups even more, but the gauge is especially true for your fingers (as Billy Gibbons would put it "Why hurt your fingers when you can play and still get a big sound with .007!"). I do play with .009, sometimes .008, on electric.I personally found (some years back) that flat wound wire made the sound a little 'dull' but really not that much. As to the wood of the electrics, unless you use bamboo or some other sort of softer wood, there's no big difference, but on string vibration sustain. I have guitars in different woods and even in metal (James Trussart <3), and if there a slight difference in sound, it's not that big a difference after you set all the other effects (comp, distortion, voicing, etc. on your amp.

On acoustic, everything is different and does make a difference, that's the beauty of acoustics!

Totally agree Patrick. I changed my electrics over to .008's and the Brian May with the VBM1 VOX amp sounds incredible with a coin.

I have just tried a set of these ...Interesting approach from this company. Many swear by them. I have an old (1947) Martin that I hope will benefit. They sound pretty nice and you really can feel the difference in terms of ease of play. I have a hard time with paying this much for strings but I had to try them once. School is still out as to if I buy again! We shall see how they hold up over time.
