Fantom power enhancement?
Fantom power enhancement?
This weekend, a musician brought a microphone that apparently does not tolerate fantom power ( it was a very good and expensive older model Sennheiser).
My question is if it would make sense to create a flag on the source to prohibit phantom power.

Re: Fantom power enhancement?
Not sure....
Like a flag under General that would say "Power ON with Phantom power disabled on all channels"?

Re: Fantom power enhancement?
Patrick, not exactly.
At the moment I connect the mike cable to an input ( stagebox or local), I would like to make sure that the fantom power cannot be switched on by mistake later on, that is done during channel configuration after the routing.
I had the idea about this at the moment I configured a stereo channel with 2 sources, and then the source number and channel number went out of sync.
Does this make sense?

I understand that some if not all ribbon mics don't tolerate Phantom power so the only way to be sure that the mic is really safe is to use a transformer isolation device like this on that input https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... ransformer

Re: Fantom power enhancement?
The way phantom powering works in Wing desks has been modified in earlier versions of the FW.
You now have to press-and-stay on the phantom power button to activate or deactivate the function. It takes about 10s before the action becomes effective. This has been set indeed to prevent accidental power on or off of phantom power.
I like it the way it is and find it safe to use. As @KMaxwell wrote, the mike could/should probably have been used through a transformer or isolating interface anyways.

Re: Fantom power enhancement?
If it's a great mic with a lower output, then something like a CloudLifter would be ideal.

or a cheaper alternative

Re: Fantom power enhancement?
It is, without being incredibly feeble and absent minded impossible to accidentally turn on phantom power on a wing, IMO one if it's best features that all digital desks should have. As noted by Paul, one must press AND HOLD the +48v for several seconds to turn it on.
Modern ribbons can tolerate _+48 but true older ones cannot, and one hit of it and the ribbon is toast. When in doubt, leave +48 off until you confirm the mic is a condenser and requires it.

If I had a mic that couldn't tolerate phantom, that would be the way to go. Who knows what could happen, especially with digital desks. Somebody on a crew recalls a scene where the channel is powered and bye bye mic.KMaxwell wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2024 10:54 pm I understand that some if not all ribbon mics don't tolerate Phantom power so the only way to be sure that the mic is really safe is to use a transformer isolation device like this on that input https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... ransformer
