Taiwan Covid Cases Going Back Down

Post by MJKlein »

In Taiwan we've enjoyed a virtually normal life without any real interruptions from the pandemic until very recently. For a little over a month we've had a local outbreak with cases that topped out in the 400s/day. Now we're back down to below 100/day. I know that some places would love 400/day but for us, it was unheard of. I was in Taiwan during the 2003 SARS epidemic and the lessons learned back then really have made a huge difference here. We are pretty much the world's IC foundry and it's not been a good prospect with many of our foreign factory workers getting sick. We haven't been locked down but our Level 3 strategy is just short of that. At the end of this month the Central Epidemic Command Center will make a decision about how long to extend Level 3. In the meantime, business is good and our economy is booming. I hope that the rest of the world is now approaching normalcy.

Good to hear @MJKlein . It looks as though we may be coming out of lockdown (finally) next month here in Canada. Watch out for that Indian variant (delta) - its a doozer.

Thanks Paul. That is good news for sure. The CECC says that there are literally only a handful of the Delta variants here. Taiwan doesn't have enough vaccines, but that's been a blessing in disguise actually as there are 3 alternative treatments available now, or within a few weeks from now.

Yes the Delta variant has caused a dramatic upturn of cases in some regions of the UK - including the town where I live. :( It is spreading most rapidly in young adults who have not yet been vaccinated and who don't seem to think that the social-distancing rules apply to them. :?

We also have them here in Canada. I've said all along that the scientists should have developed a stupidity vaccine at the same time as the Covid-19 one, just for them.

Darwinian principles should stop them polluting the gene-pool but they are relatively unaffected by the virus so maybe not...

Here, it's "the night people" who have created the local outbreak. I had a talk with my friend in Osaka and he said the same thing. People going to brothels/KTV hostess bars and "teahouses" doing things they do not want revealed, and then refusing to cooperate with authorities who are managing the contact tracing. The Taiwan local transmissions have been linked to a foreign pilot who spent time in the company of a local woman (who is not his wife, who was back home) and he didn't want to cooperate. Then we had the Wanhua tea house outbreak and those people didn't want their vices to come to light. But the social distancing and mask mandates absolutely do work and Taiwan is proof of that. It will be back under control in a few more weeks. The vast majority of Taiwan people will not be vaccinated most likely and we have yet to see how that will play out as the WHO rolls out their vaccine passport program. But this week the Netherlands announced that they are opening up travel from Taiwan with no quarantine required and no proof of either vaccination or a negative test.

If that caused a major local outbreak, the woman must have had a lot of friends. ;)

LOL. My wife's first comment was "Does grandpa need to go there so often just to touch a woman?" (most of the infected men were over 60).

"Yes. Yes he does" was my reply.

That sounds hilarious in Chinese.

These tea houses have been around since the Japanese era. Just the other day I was watching an historical Taiwan film from the mid-60's on this YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TWCTFA/videos They release restored Taiwan films for a few days at a time and they are worth watching. The film was about a woman who was down on her luck but was attractive, so she went to Wanhua to find "work" in one of the tea houses. Even in that film people talked about loose women working in that area and that even if she didn't personally do immoral things, her reputation would be ruined by association. To this day, nothing has changed. Those places are run by gangsters and they all pay off the police. So, they don't follow the Level 3 restrictions and as a result - local transmission. TBH, I'm surprised it took this long but the majority of us Taiwanese take epidemics seriously.

These 2 articles are almost humorous except for the fact that it's a serious outbreak for us.

Yesterday our case numbers were 104, all local.

Only 40% of the population is willing to get vaccinated according to polls. The adverse effects are significant so far:

My wife's 80 y/o father refused one based on the reported deaths. 71.9% of people vaccinated on Taiwan have experienced some form of vaccine related symptoms:

Who knows why? We have 3 other treatment options coming online.

It is a great lesson that the quick reactions of authorities and the responsible approach of most of the population had worked so well, @MJKlein . Such a shame that the actions of a few selfish people can spoil it all. I hope that the new measures bring it swiftly under control.

Any death resulting from vaccination is going to frighten people. There has been a lot of investigation in the UK into issues resulting from AstraZenica vaccination. Some studies show that death from blood-clots caused by Covid-19 when not vaccinated is eight times more likely than the same condition resulting from vaccination. It is also apparent that most vaccine-related problems affect those under 30 so can be managed by vaccine selection. Experience of the complications has also allowed more-rapid diagnosis and treatment so the fatality rate has fallen dramatically.
