I reinstalled or updated the firmware on the SD16. I don't know which one I did because I have no idea how to tell what firmware is already installed. It did not fix the problem. Since it is out of warranty I took it apart and didn't see any evidence that anything was spilled into it and nothing looked obviously wrong with it. So it is still not working properly I guess it is time for them to send it in for repair.
