Re: X-Dante latency ?

Not to worry @garyh and @heavy90, I think I have found the source of the misunderstanding. In this video:

at 0:39 the narrator says: "The latency of each audio subscription is determined by the higher latency settings on the receiving and transmitting devices."

Most engineers tend to view this as "the weakest link" and in my own Dante network, when I have to send audio to the slowest device I have to take that into consideration. That is why all the Dante guys I've talked with say that the slowest device sets the network speed. It is a viewpoint apparently and not a technical truth.

So, the individual devices are set to their individual settings and between device subscriptions the higher number sets the latency for that subscription, which if I am not mistaken is what @heavy90 has been trying to tell us.

I know I said I was done with this topic, lol but I had just spent about 4 hours at the mixing desk and was too wound up to sleep, so I checked Audinate's YouTube channel for that video, and there it was. I got about 3.5 hours sleep so wow, it's 1981 all over again.

I completely agree. We just have to listen to what they are saying!

@Heavy90 oh, you didn't. I always get wound up after a mixing session and can't sleep. And yes I learned something. Thank you for that.

Gary,
I tried today to set the x-dante up for 44 k...
X32Core set to ext. card
Couldn't find a setting for 44 k in my Dante controller

Help much appreciated

@Klaus Its under device info/double click M32 or whatever one you want, then select the device config column and you will see clock drop down. See attached. Once you change it hit apply.

Off Topic
Speaking of latency, last night during a session, all my audio just stopped working. No sound, no event; just no audio. I opened Dante Controller and was greeted by a dialog saying there was a new version available and asking if I would like to upgrade? After I installed the new version everything was back to normal. That was quite disruptive and totally unnecessary. I'm not sure what would have happened if I had opted to not upgrade at that very moment.

@MJKlein That message in and of itself is fairly common as they do update DC regularly BUT it has never caused any stoppage of signal ever for me. You update or not based on your needs (I usually do it soon after I see it to be current) but you do so at YOUR convenience.. So I'm saying (imo) the original issue was not caused by that. There could also be updates to Dante firmware available for some devices that is needed to have all devices be up to date-this separate from the overall version update. I mention because there could be some bug fixes (one of which MAY have caused your problem) that will keep things running smoothly. I don't know what caused your issue but I doubt it was the available update message. This could be some random computer based glitch that never happens again-best guess. BTW if you have not ever updated any firmware, you do need internet access to let the Dante Updater (teardrop icon) check your devices. It will notify you if there are updates-again you do it at your convenience. I would otherwise not be connected to the internet by the computer in the system as that alone could cause an issue. To be honest I sometimes also forget to turn it off.

I usually leave mine connected to the internet because.... it's complicated. If I don't it causes IP conflicts with AutoMate.

I've had a few audio stoppages before but I was able to solve them with adjusted settings. Last night was very weird. Normally if I have an audio stoppage, when opening up Dante Controller the issue will be obvious, with red bars and broken connections. Last night when I opened DC I was immediately presented with an Update dialog. I did the update and everything returned to normal. I am inclined to think that DC stopped the audio with that dialog box.

Apply button is greyed out, ( Dante controller v 4.2.7.1, OSX 10.9.5, DVS 4.0.4.3 )
but once 'all' devices are set the same it worked

Best
